A story workshop

Sit down.
Write.

Breadmaker is built to make every part of writing a book as simple as possible. Plan, outline, research, write, and edit without setting up a system first.

Manuscript

Write the book.

Manuscript is where the book lives. Add chapters and scene headings, move through the draft from the sidebar, or hide the rest of the app and just write.

Canvas

Think somewhere that isn’t a page.

Canvas is the loose planning space. Put characters, scenes, research, questions, or whatever else you need on the board and move it around until it makes sense.

Maps

See the story move.

Maps lets you track things across the book. Use a line for a character, plot, theme, or anything else you want to follow from chapter to chapter.

Tasks

Remember what the book needs.

Tasks is where you keep the work the book still needs. Add milestones when a fix has more than one step, finish it, and move on.

Checkpoints

Save it. Keep going.

Checkpoints save the current version of a chapter or the entire manuscript so you can keep going. Compare it later, restore it, or export it when you need it.

Editor’s Eye

Make familiar words feel unfamiliar again.

Editor’s Eye temporarily changes the look of your draft while you edit. Same words, different font, spacing, and page treatment, so familiar sentences are easier to see again.

Before you start

A few useful answers.

The book is the point. Here’s where Breadmaker fits around it.

What kind of writing is Breadmaker for?

Breadmaker is a writing app for long-form fiction. Draft chapters in Manuscript, collect ideas on Canvas, follow characters and plot threads with Maps, and keep revision work in Tasks. Use as much or as little of the workshop as your book needs.

Can I write in a browser?

Yes. Open the hosted web app and sign in with a Breadmaker account. The local editor runs on your own computer and does not require an account.

Do I need a subscription?

The local editor is free and open source. Premium plans and optional cloud services are in preparation. Pricing and availability will be published here before subscriptions are offered.

Can I take my project with me?

You can export and import complete Breadmaker projects. Checkpoints also let you save versions of a chapter or the whole manuscript as you revise. Your book belongs to you.
